Good Relations Wins Courts Brief

Tuesday, 27 November 2007

Good Relations will focus on communicating the effectiveness of the scheme - Simply Speedy, Summary Justice - to professionals working across the criminal justice system including the Police, Crown Prosecution Service, magistrates, probation officers and defence solicitors.

The programme of activity will include visits to a number of criminal justice areas across the country to gather information on the success of the project and testimonials from people working in the criminal justice system. Good Relations will also advise on communications with media and stakeholders.

The Good Relations team will be headed up by Director Phil Brady, reporting to Erum Mussa, communications co-ordinator at the Criminal Justice Delivery Unit.

Phil Brady said, “The success of the scheme depends on cultural change and new ways of working for all agencies involved with criminal justice. Our role is to help encourage these changes by communicating the benefits to professionals across all of these disciplines from the Police to the CPS, Magistrates and defence solicitors.”

Simple, Speedy, Summary Justice was launched following a review of the magistrates’ courts, which concluded in 2006. This found that criminal cases were taking too long, with too many hearings, before reaching a conclusion. The scheme is currently being rolled out nationally.
