De Facto Communications has been chosen by Kimberly-Clark Europe to help launch a microbial barrier that aims to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI’s). Currently three to five percent of patients undergoing surgery are at risk from SSI’s, a major source of morbidity following operative procedures. Integuseal© is a completely new approach to surgical site sterilisation based on a cyanoacrylate formulation which immobilises bacteria prior to surgical incision. Delivered through an ergonomic single use applicator, Integuseal can be applied quickly and easily and used as a microbial sealant during virtually any surgical procedure.
De Facto is co-ordinating a Pan-European and local language PR campaign for Kimberly-Clark Europe, targeting surgeons specialising in Cardiovascular, Orthopaedics and Neurological interventions. In combination with De Facto Medica, the Medical Education subsidiary of De Facto Communications, Key Opinion Leader support will be generated for Integuseal initially within the UK, Germany and France. The marcomms programme is further planned to extend into exhibition and conference support activities to promote Integuseal to key European markets. Kimberly-Clark launched Integuseal in March and is hoped to extensively reduce the aftercare costs associated with treating patients with SSI’s.
Integuseal immobilises dangerous pathogens residing deep in the skin as well as those surviving standard pre-operative prepping such as MRSA, S. epidermis and E-coli. The innovative liquid forms a breathable barrier that is non-flammable, latex-free, non-irritating and non-cytotoxic. Fast-drying, Integuseal can be used in conjunction with other common preparatory treatments and need not be removed prior to skin closure. The film bonds to skin surfaces regardless of curvature, hair-content or the amount or types of flora present. Furthermore, Integuseal’s unique mechanism of action does not promote subsequent bacterial resistance.
