NCAS is a division of the National Patient Safety Agency. As an advisory body its role is to promote public confidence in doctors, dentists and pharmacists by helping to address concerns about the performance of individual practitioners.
NCAS is commissioning some work to identify the need for and benefits of a service for a defined group of nurses and midwives. As part of this, NCAS has appointed Opinion Leader to conduct a stakeholder engagement exercise around performance concerns in nursing.
The project, which involves interviews with senior stakeholders and referring bodies and a large quantitative study and interviews with nurses and midwives, will inform any decision about the development of a service for nurses and midwives. If such a service goes ahead, this research will ensure that it addresses the concerns these audiences may have regarding performance issues and that it is configured in such a way as to promote public and provider confidence in nursing and midwifery. In addition, the information will provide a baseline against which an evaluation of any NCAS service may be made.
Becky Seale, consultant said about the appointment: “We are thrilled to have been awarded this piece of work. Having recently conducted a large project on behalf of the Prime Ministers Commission on Nursing and Midwifery, we have a particular understanding of the current context of nursing and midwifery and are keen to apply this. We have worked with NCAS on several related pieces of work and are pleased to be continuing this relationship.”
